Game Changer: Dynamics NAV Basic Support Ends – What’s Next?
In today’s fast-changing world, it’s a bad business strategy to use outdated IT tools. If you go this route, how will your organisation manage to meet the ever-increasing demands of your customers?
Earlier this year, Microsoft ceased to provide basic support for all versions of their Dynamics NAV on-premise (also known as Navision) ERP solution. This means that security updates are no longer distributed. This means that, as a Dynamics NAV user, you run the increased risk of cyber security cases.
If you’re still using Dynamics NAV, it’s time for action.
According to Microsoft’s formal lifecycle policy, each version of their Dynamics NAV solutions receives 10 years of support. That period is broken down into 5 years of basic support and another 5 years of extended support.
What’s the difference between these two types of support?
Basic support
This includes providing new functionalities, security-related updates and non-security-related updates. Customers with a maintenance contract will also be provided with the important updates required for adapted laws and regulations, such as the AVG. This support disappeared for all NAV versions in the beginning of 2023.
Extended support
Dynamics NAV customers with extended support will only receive security-related updates. This means the end of new functionalities and innovations. Today, this additional service is only available for organisations working with Dynamics NAV version 2015 to version 2018. Users of versions older than Dynamics NAV 2015 fall outside all applicable support rules.
Dynamics NAV 2018 is the last NAV version that moved from basic to extended support. It’s important to realise that even with extended support, you’re already within the ‘extra time’ of your usage phase.
When you think about your migration plans, don’t forget to take into account that a transition can easily take 6 to 12 months. You should certainly also take into account that many implementation partners are currently very busy – this means that the required capacity for your project might not be immediately available.
As a professional organisation, can you afford to use an ERP system with only minimal support – or, worse, or no support at all?
Microsoft is offering NAV customers with a maintenance contract attractive discounts to switch to Business Central. Don’t wait any longer.
